Until recently, the only option for homeowners looking to power their homes with renewable energy was to install expensive solar panels on the roof – a big cost many of us weren't able to pay. Today, Village Green provides homes with the option to purchase renewable energy from solar arrays and wind farms nearby without the hassle or upfront cost – just an extra $5 over your monthly utility bill.
How does it work?
Renewable energy generators issue a certificate for every unit of electricity they produce, called a renewable energy certificate (REC). By law in many states, utilities are required to purchase RECs for a certain percentage of the electricity they sell. Village Green purchases these RECs away from the utilities on your behalf, forcing utilities and others to generate even more renewable energy in order to comply with their obligations. Village Green enables households to purchase renewable energy through the electricity grid with the purchase of RECs.
Am I "Carbon Neutral"?
Yes, by purchasing exclusively from solar arrays and wind farms, your electricity will be carbon neutral. In addition, your purchasing of RECs helps reduce America's dependence on imported fuels, reduces smog and acid rain, and supports the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Where does my money go?
A large part of the money goes directly to owners of wind farms and solar panels – without this second source of income, many of these projects would not have been built. In addition to reducing your carbon footprint, by purchasing renewable energy, you will help to reduce America's dependence on imported fuels, minimize smog, acid rain, and nuclear waste, and support the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The remaining money goes to Village Green to continue to expand and bring more people into our Village.
